Art & Soul Kids and Family Day

Saturday, Feburary 14, 2026 at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Tickets $9
Back by popular demand, this Roswell Roots exclusive family day is packed with performances, activities, and fun for all ages! The lobby will be buzzing with free interactive experiences—including a STEM activity hosted by the North Fulton Area Section of NCNW—plus two exciting stage shows:
9:30 a.m. – The Rhythm of Story: Africa to America
Beloved Atlanta storyteller and children’s author Mama Koku takes the stage—joined by master drummer Omelika Kuumba on djembe. With humor, music, and plenty of audience participation, Mama Koku brings African folktales and African American history to life in unforgettable ways, while Omelika’s powerful rhythms deepen the connection between story, movement, and tradition.
Mama Koku’s engaging storytelling has been featured by the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, The Atlanta Botanical Gardens, The Atlanta History Center, the High Museum of Art, and Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. If she looks familiar, adults may recognize her from her small but memorable role in the classic film The Color Purple.
Omelika Kuumba is Director of the Metropolitan Atlanta African Dancers and Drummers and Co-founder and Artistic Director Emerita of Giwayen Mata. A pioneering artist and educator, she has trained under West African masters, performed internationally, and taught dance at Spelman College for over 25 years.
11:30 a.m. – Blacktop Playground Improv for Kids
Get ready to laugh out loud as the Blacktop Improv, with credits on BET, HBO, and Comedy Central, turn kids’ suggestions into side-splitting comedy. Their child-like sense of humor and lightning-fast creativity make every show a one-of-a-kind adventure where the audience is part of the action.
Don’t miss this vibrant day of family fun, culture, and creativity as part of 25th Anniversary Roswell Roots Festival!
